RAB: Private Doctor on Call

RAB compared to the alternatives

RAB Arztbesuche is a private medical home-visit service in Berlin, set side by side here against eight alternatives, 116117, the emergency room, the ambulance (112), telemedicine and more, available daily from 6 am to midnight and billed under the German GOÄ schedule.

The right care depends on your situation, your insurance and how urgent it is. This page compares RAB against eight alternatives on the things that actually differ, response time, where you are treated, who pays and what it costs.

Comparison · Private doctor vs. statutory on-call

RAB vs 116117 on-call service

116117 is Germany's statutory on-call medical service, free for those on public insurance, but often heavily loaded on Berlin weekends. The RAB on-call service is the private alternative for self-pay patients and privately insured guests who need a short waiting time, an experienced doctor on site and calm instead of a phone queue.

Aspect RAB Berlin 116117 (statutory on-call service)
Response time in Berlin typically 60–90 min. on site, often quicker in the evening 1–6 hours, much longer on weekends
Cost Private GOÄ billing, around €150–300 per visit Free for those on statutory insurance
Who attends Medical expertise, named in advance Rotating on-call doctor, not known in advance
Languages German, English, further languages in the team Mostly German
Availability Daily 6 am – midnight, 365 days Only outside regular practice hours
Patient group Private patients, self-pay, hotel guests All insured, with focus on statutory cover
Booking & process Direct call, fixed appointment window Phone triage, then dispatch

When RAB is the better choice

  • You need a predictable arrival time and a fixed appointment window
  • English-language treatment in the hotel or apartment is essential
  • You are privately insured or pay for the visit yourself
  • You want an experienced doctor, not a rotating on-call doctor
  • Discretion and a calm setting matter (hotel, embassy, private residence)

When 116117 is the right entry point

  • You are on statutory insurance and can wait for an available slot
  • Symptoms are clearly bounded and not time-critical
  • You want to use the free service your statutory insurer provides
  • You only need a phone triage during the night

Comparison · Emergency room vs. house-call

RAB vs A&E

An emergency department is the right address for life-threatening or clinically unclear acute cases. For many complaints (fever, gastroenteritis, bronchitis, urinary tract infection) the ER is oversized and means long waits. The RAB house-call provides a calmer, faster ambulatory alternative in your own setting.

Aspect RAB Berlin Hospital emergency department
Waiting time Typically 60–90 min. on site Triage-based, often 3–8 hours
Where you go Doctor comes to you Patient travels to hospital
Cost GOÄ invoice, around €150–300 Insurance billing, possible private surcharge
Availability Daily 6 am – midnight 24/7, but prioritised by severity
Diagnostics Clinical exam, rapid labs, ECG Imaging, full lab, on-site consultants
Suitable cases Stable ambulatory conditions Acute, potentially life-threatening
Privacy Hotel, apartment, home Shared waiting area

When RAB is the better choice

  • Stable, clearly ambulatory complaints without red flags
  • You want to avoid long waits and a hospital atmosphere
  • Treatment in a hotel, apartment or home is appropriate
  • You need a prescription, sick note and GOÄ invoice in one appointment
  • You want English-language care

When the emergency department is the right call

  • Signs of heart attack, stroke or severe breathlessness
  • Major injuries, suspected fracture, ongoing bleeding
  • Acute confusion or neurological deficit
  • Pregnancy complications, acute abdominal pain of unclear cause
  • Immediate imaging (CT, MRI, X-ray) is needed

Comparison · Telemedicine vs. house-call

RAB vs telemedicine

Platforms like Kry, Zava, TeleClinic and Online-Praxis offer fast video consultations and digital prescriptions. For many questions that is lean and practical. But the moment a physical exam, auscultation, ECG or rapid test is required, the digital consultation hits its limit, and the RAB house-call begins.

Aspect RAB Berlin Telemedicine platforms (Kry, Zava, TeleClinic, Online-Praxis)
Examination On-site physical exam, ECG, rapid tests History and visual exam via video
Availability Daily 6 am – midnight in Berlin App-dependent, often 24/7, short slots
Cost GOÄ invoice, around €150–300 Flat rate around €25–60 per consult
Prescribing scope All prescriptions, controlled drugs after clinical review Limited scope, mostly standard medications
Sick note Up to the regular full duration Often only 3 days, first certificate only
Language German, English, further languages in the team Platform-dependent, often German/English
Suitable cases Acute infections, abdomen, heart, airways, otitis and more Repeat scripts, simple cold, clearly visual findings

When RAB is the better choice

  • You need a physical exam, auscultation, ECG or labs
  • Symptoms cannot be safely assessed by video
  • You want every output from one source, prescription, sick note, report
  • You have pain, breathlessness, high fever or unclear symptoms
  • You want personal, in-person contact and trust

When telemedicine is the right choice

  • Clearly defined routine matters (repeat prescription, simple cold)
  • You are mobile-limited or travelling and only need an assessment
  • Visually well-defined findings (e.g. a skin rash)
  • You want a cheap digital first consultation and a recommendation

Comparison · Hospital private clinic vs. house-call

RAB vs hospital private clinic

A hospital private outpatient clinic is the right address when specialist consultation, in-house diagnostics and a named consultant matter most. The RAB house-call is the right address for acute symptoms to be assessed at home or in a hotel, no travel, no waiting room.

Aspect RAB Berlin Private outpatient clinic at a hospital
Location At the patient's home or hotel Hospital clinic
Appointment Within hours, acute Usually days to weeks ahead
Diagnostics Exam, ECG, rapid tests on site Full imaging and lab in-house
Specialisation General medicine / internal, broad Highly specialised department
Billing GOÄ, around €150–300 Private outpatient fees, varies by department
Language German, English, more languages Varies, often German
Suitable cases Acute infections, abdomen, airways, pain Planned specialist work-up, surgical consult

When RAB is the better choice

  • You need a timely assessment, not one in two weeks
  • It's an acute complaint, not planned specialist work-up
  • You can't or don't want to leave home
  • You want prescription, sick note and report in one visit
  • Discretion at home or in a hotel matters

When the private outpatient clinic is right

  • A specific question requires a named consultant or senior specialist
  • Full imaging (MRI, CT, endoscopy) is part of the work-up
  • Planned procedure or surgical preparation
  • Second opinion on a complex diagnosis
  • Multidisciplinary tumour board or cross-specialty conference

Comparison · Practice appointment vs. house-call

RAB vs Doctolib search

Doctolib is Germany's largest appointment platform, practical for planned practice visits. Acute slots in Berlin are scarce. The RAB house-call answers a different question: not 'where is a slot today?' but 'who is coming to me today?'.

Aspect RAB Berlin Doctolib booking platform
Search logic One request, dispatch handles it Platform search across many practices
Acute appointment Within hours Often weeks ahead at popular Berlin practices
Travel Doctor comes to the patient Patient travels to the practice
Cost GOÄ, around €150–300 Regular statutory or private billing
Language German, English, more requestable Visible in profile, varies
Setting Home, hotel, apartment Practice waiting room
Suitable cases Acute symptoms, mobility-limited patients Planned visits, routine, specialist work-up

When RAB is the better choice

  • You need an appointment today, not in three weeks
  • You can't or don't want to travel to a practice
  • You are a tourist or hotel guest without a local GP
  • You specifically want an English-speaking doctor
  • You value a calm setting without a waiting room

When Doctolib is the better choice

  • You are looking for a planned specialist (orthopaedics, dermatology, gynaecology)
  • Prevention, vaccination, routine check is due
  • You have time and want to compare providers and reviews
  • Locally available large-scale diagnostics are needed (MRI, ultrasound)

Comparison · 112 vs. house-call

RAB vs emergency services 112

Berlin Fire Brigade emergency services are the only address for life-threatening emergencies, heart attack, stroke, severe breathlessness, major trauma. RAB complements this by handling acute ambulatory complaints in the home setting. The two systems are clearly separated.

Aspect RAB Berlin Emergency services 112

Resources Doctor with examination kit Emergency doctor, ambulance, hospital link
Response time typically 60–90 min. on site Few minutes, highest priority
Cost GOÄ invoice, around €150–300 Covered by health insurance
Location of care Home, hotel, apartment On site + hospital transport
Availability Daily 6 am – midnight 24/7, immediate dispatch
Examples Fever, bronchitis, UTI, circulation Resuscitation, acute chest pain, severe breathlessness

When RAB is the right choice

  • Symptoms are uncomfortable but stable and ambulatory
  • You can wait 60–90 minutes for arrival
  • You need a diagnosis, prescription, possibly a sick note
  • Conditions like fever, cold, pain, gastroenteritis
  • You are privately insured or self-pay

  • Seizure, severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis)
  • Pregnancy emergency, labour, vaginal bleeding

Comparison · Walk-in clinic vs. house-call

RAB vs walk-in clinic

Walk-in clinics without appointment are a pragmatic Berlin solution for acute, ambulatory-treatable complaints, if you are mobile and willing to wait, they are usually a good fit. If you cannot travel, are managing a hotel stay or need discretion, the RAB house-call is the better format.

Aspect RAB Berlin Walk-in clinic / open consultation
Mobility Patient stays at home Patient has to travel
Waiting time Typically 60–90 min. on site Varies, often 30–120 min. in waiting room
Appointment On call, no waiting room No appointment, first come first served
Cost GOÄ, around €150–300 Regular statutory/private billing
Setting Your own space, undisturbed Practice with other patients
Languages German, English, more Varies by practice
Suitable cases Acute complaints + need to stay at home Acute complaints in a mobile patient

When RAB is the better choice

  • You cannot or do not want to leave home
  • You are in a hotel and don't want to find a practice address
  • You'd rather avoid a waiting room shared with other infectious patients
  • You value a discreet setting (diplomats, executives)
  • A small child, senior or care recipient is hard to move

When a walk-in clinic makes sense

  • You are mobile and accept the wait
  • You want to use regular statutory health insurance benefits
  • It's a simple matter, script, brief exam
  • You're looking for the low-threshold, low-cost option

Comparison · Paediatric on-call vs. house-call

RAB vs paediatric on-call

When a child is ill, every hour counts, and so does the right setting. Berlin has established paediatric on-call structures for statutory patients. The RAB house-call complements that for private patients, tourist families and parents who don't want to move their feverish child.

Aspect RAB Berlin Paediatric on-call service
Who attends Doctor, broad general / internal training Paediatrician (child specialist)
Travel Doctor comes to the child Variable, sometimes doctor comes, sometimes office visit
Waiting time Typically 60–90 min. on site Seasonal, peak load in winter
Cost GOÄ, around €150–300 Billed via statutory / private insurance
Availability Daily 6 am – midnight On-call hours vary
Languages German, English, more Mostly German
Suitable cases Common acute infections from infancy Full paediatric advisory needs

When RAB is the better choice

  • You are a tourist or hotel guest without a Berlin paediatrician
  • You don't want to move the feverish child
  • English-language care matters (international families)
  • You value a calm setting in a hotel room or apartment
  • It's a typical respiratory infection, gastroenteritis, otitis or fever

When paediatric on-call is the right call

  • Complex paediatric questions (e.g. newborns under 4 weeks, chronically ill children)
  • Suspected classical childhood disease with specialist indication
  • You are on statutory insurance and want the statutory pathway
  • Paediatric-specific diagnostics are needed

Frequently asked questions

Can I book RAB if I'm on statutory insurance?

Yes, as a self-pay patient. The invoice follows GOÄ rates; statutory insurers usually do not reimburse private house-calls. Some supplementary private policies do cover part of the cost.

How long do you actually wait for 116117 in Berlin?

Reported waits vary widely, from one to six hours, depending on weekday, time of day and load. Flu weekends regularly produce longer waits. 116117 itself does not publish guaranteed times.

Is RAB more expensive because it's faster?

RAB is billed privately under GOÄ, typically €150–300 per house-call depending on time of day, examinations and travel. The speed comes from the dispatch model, not from a separate premium.

When should I call 112 instead of RAB or 116117?

For unconsciousness, severe chest pain, acute breathlessness, serious injury, heavy bleeding or signs of stroke, always 112. RAB and 116117 are both ambulatory services, not emergency response.

Can you arrange hospital admission?

Yes. If the house-call reveals findings that require inpatient care, we coordinate admission to a suitable Berlin hospital, on request with telephone hand-over.

Is the ER free for private patients?

Care is billed via the insurer (statutory flat rate or private DRG). Private patients may face an additional consultant-level fee depending on the hospital and status.

What about night-time symptoms that aren't life-threatening?

Then the RAB house-call (until midnight) or 116117 is usually the calmer option compared with the ER. Hospital triage runs by severity, not arrival order.

What does the doctor bring for the house exam?

A fully equipped bag: stethoscope, otoscope, blood-pressure cuff, pulse oximeter, thermometer, rapid blood-glucose and urine tests, ECG, dressings and (depending on the case) medications for immediate treatment.

Can telemedicine reliably clarify my symptoms?

For clearly bounded and well-describable symptoms, yes. For anything that requires listening, palpation or measurement, no, that is a clinical limit, not a platform issue.

Does RAB also issue digital prescriptions?

We write the prescription on-site during the house-call, or send it digitally and GDPR-compliantly, whichever the patient prefers.

Is telemedicine cheaper?

Yes, considerably. A video consult is usually €25–60; a private house-call under GOÄ runs €150–300. The price gap reflects the examination scope, not medical quality.

Can I try telemedicine first and book RAB afterwards?

Of course. Many patients use a video consult to find out whether their symptoms need a physical exam, and only book RAB once it's clear they do.

Can you refer to a private outpatient clinic?

Yes. We know the Berlin hospital private clinics (from Charité through Vivantes to private hospitals) and actively support referral aligned with the clinical question.

What does a hospital private consultation cost?

It varies strongly by department. A standard consultation is often €200–600, specialised investigations above that. The hospital's own price list and your private insurer's coverage are best clarified directly.

Is the private outpatient clinic faster than statutory routes?

Usually yes, with appointments within days to weeks depending on the clinic. It is not, however, an address for symptoms within the next hour, that is the domain of RAB or, in an emergency, the ER.

Can I use the house-call for chronic complaints?

Yes for acute deterioration of a chronic condition. Long-term management, therapy adjustment and follow-up belong with the specialist private outpatient clinic or your specialist.

Is RAB on Doctolib?

We take bookings mainly by phone, because dispatching acute house-calls is markedly more efficient in conversation. Online booking runs through our own website.

How fast can I find a same-day slot on Doctolib in Berlin?

Very variable. Some practices same day, popular GPs and specialists in popular districts often only after weeks. Acute symptoms can't be reliably routed this way.

I booked a GP via Doctolib, is RAB still worth knowing?

Yes. RAB is the complement for evenings, weekends and holidays when the Doctolib-booked practice is closed. The two channels complement one another.

Is RAB more expensive than a Doctolib appointment?

Yes, a practice bills via statutory card or regular private cover. RAB is private, GOÄ-based, with the convenience of 'doctor to me'. The premium reflects exactly that convenience and speed.

Could RAB be faster than 112 in an emergency?

No. Emergency services hold highest priority and use blue-light privileges, response in minutes is normal. RAB drives without such privileges, with 60–90 minutes arrival.

What if I call RAB and an emergency turns up?

The on-site doctor immediately alerts emergency services, provides first measures and hands over structurally. It happens rarely, but we are prepared.

Does health insurance cover ambulance services for private patients too?

Yes, in Germany emergency services are covered for all insured. Billing runs via your health insurer, statutory or private.

Why not just call 112 if in doubt?

That is exactly what we recommend for any suspected emergency. RAB is the choice when you are confident there is no emergency indication and still need medical help.

Are walk-in clinics attractive for private patients?

They are primarily designed for statutory patients. Private patients are treated, but the comfort advantage of private status plays a smaller role in the walk-in setting than during a house-call.

How long are waits in Berlin walk-in clinics?

Very variable, depending on day and time, between 30 minutes and several hours. Few practices communicate reliable times.

What about children at walk-in clinics?

Some Berlin practices treat children, others focus on adults. For infants and small children with high fever the house-call is often the calmer setting.

Can I call ahead to see if a slot is open?

Some practices give telephone updates on current load, many don't. If you want a defined slot, RAB or a regular booking is the better choice.

From what age does RAB treat children?

We treat children from infancy for the typical acute indications. For infants under 3 months or any newborn red flag, we recommend going directly to a paediatric hospital.

Do I have to choose a paediatrician?

No. General and internal medicine specialists are fully qualified for common acute paediatric indications. For specifically paediatric questions we refer to a paediatrician or hospital.

Can you issue a sick note for caring for a sick child?

Yes. We issue the certificate working parents need to stay home with a sick child, and also the parent's own sick note if they fall ill too.

What if the child needs urgent help?

For acute breathlessness, severe dehydration, seizure, mental status change or severe allergic reaction, always call 112 first. RAB complements but does not replace emergency response.
