How 116 117 works

After calling 116 117, a trained KVB team runs a telephone triage first: they ask about symptoms, onset and pre-existing conditions, then decide the next step. If the call reveals a genuine emergency, such as unconsciousness or heart-attack signs, Munich's integrated control centre immediately alerts the ambulance service via 112, with no time lost.

In most cases you either get phone advice, a referral to one of Munich's eight adult on-call practices, or, if you are verifiably not transportable, a home visit from the KVB's mobile service. The practices are staffed exactly outside regular practice hours: on weekdays from 6 or 7 pm, on Wednesdays and Fridays as early as 2 or 4 pm, and on weekends and public holidays from 8 or 9 am until 9 or 10 pm depending on the practice. Four of them are pediatric locations, three of those weekends only; the Elisenhof practice by the main station is the only one covering children on weekday evenings as well. 116 117 promises no fixed waiting time, reported waits run to several hours for most patients, one to six depending on demand. Anyone who needs a predictable, scheduled appointment instead books the RAB house call directly online or by phone, typical arrival is 60 to 90 minutes.

Have ready for the call

  • Health insurance card (name, date of birth, insurer)
  • Complaints with onset and course, measured temperature

Frequently asked questions

Which number do I call in an emergency in Munich?

For acute danger to life, always 112, it dispatches the ambulance service with an emergency physician through Munich's integrated control centre and is free, valid across Europe and available around the clock. For acute but not life-threatening complaints outside office hours, 116 117 of the KV Bayerns medical association is responsible. If you want fast, personal help at home, you can reach RAB Arztbesuche daily from 6 am to midnight via the call button on this page.

What is the difference between 112 and 116 117?

112 is the emergency number for life-threatening emergencies with ambulance and emergency physician. 116 117 is the on-call medical service for acute but non-life-threatening complaints outside regular office hours and can refer you to one of Munich's twelve on-call practices or arrange a home visit from the KVB's mobile service.

How fast does the ambulance arrive in Munich?

Munich is covered by the Bavarian Hilfsfrist: under section 2 (1) of the ordinance implementing the Bavarian emergency-services act (AVBayRDG), ambulance stations must be planned so that an emergency site can as a rule be reached no later than twelve minutes after the vehicle sets off. That is a planning requirement for the service area, not an individual entitlement, and it counts from dispatch, not from the call. A private house call from RAB Arztbesuche for non-life-threatening complaints usually takes place within 60 to 90 minutes, without drawing on the ambulance service.

How long do you actually wait for 116 117 in Munich?

Reported waits vary widely, from one to six hours, depending on weekday, time of day and load. Flu weekends and Sunday evenings regularly produce longer waits, because only a limited on-call roster covers roughly 1.5 million residents. 116 117 does not promise guaranteed times. A private house call from RAB, by contrast, usually arrives within 60 to 90 minutes.

Can I get a home visit through 116 117?

Home visits by the statutory service are possible but are prioritised by urgency and generally carried out only when transportability is verifiably lacking; during high demand arrival may be delayed. Those needing a planned, short arrival time may alternatively use a private medical house call, typically within 60 to 90 minutes.

Is the statutory on-call service free of charge?

Yes, for statutory (GKV) patients the on-call service (116 117) bills the health insurer directly, and the call itself is free. Private patients submit the invoice to their insurer. RAB's private house call, by contrast, is a self-pay or private-insurance service under the GOÄ, usually 150–300 €.

Can I book RAB if I'm on statutory insurance?

Yes, as a self-pay patient. The invoice follows GOÄ rates, usually 150–300 € per visit; statutory insurers usually do not reimburse private house calls. Some supplementary private policies cover part of the cost. In return, the doctor arrives on a predictable schedule within 60–90 minutes, with no waiting room and with prescription and sick note issued on site.

Where is the nearest on-call practice in Munich?

The finder above lists all twelve Munich locations with address, city district and live opening status: eight for adults, among them Elisenhof at Prielmayerstraße 3 by the main station, Schwabing at Kölner Platz 1, Neuperlach at Oskar-Maria-Graf-Ring 51 and Pasing at Steinerweg 5, plus four pediatric practices at the Schwabing, Harlaching and Dritter Orden hospitals and at Elisenhof. To avoid travel and waiting rooms, you can instead order a private doctor to your home.

Which pharmacy is on duty tonight in Munich?

The pharmacy on-call service names it free of charge on 0800 00 22 833, or on 22 8 33 without an area code from a German mobile for at most 0.69 € per minute. The finder above shows the same list under the pharmacies tab, filtered across the 25 city districts; Munich's pharmacies rotate the duty, and one shift runs from 8:30 am to 8:30 am the next day, half an hour earlier than in Berlin or Hamburg. A prescription for the night is issued on the spot during an RAB house call, daily from 6 am to midnight.

Which number do I call for poisoning?

Munich is covered by the Giftnotruf München poison centre at TUM Klinikum rechts der Isar, reachable around the clock on 089 19 240 and free of charge for private individuals at landline rates. Have ready what was taken, how much, when, and the age of the person affected. If there is unconsciousness, a seizure or breathing trouble, call 112 first; the poison centre then advises the ambulance crew.
